Shangri La Gardens Director To Speak

 The Newton County Chamber of Commerce will have their regular monthly meeting Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 12 Noon at the Christian Community Life Center on 207 Houston St. in Newton. Lunch will be served and community reports given.
 
The guest speaker will be Dr. Michael Hoke, Director of Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center in Orange. Dr. Hoke’s objective is for Shangri La to become one of the finest botanical gardens and nature centers in the nation. Its mission of "mentoring children of all ages to be kind to their world", will allow Shangri La to make a positive impact on horticulture and environmental education throughout the United States. A door prize will be awarded to one of the attendees! Our March speaker, Peggy Muckleroy, won the pen set donated by CommunityBank of Texas. Anyone wanting to donate a door prize for the lunch meetings please contact Susan Karpel at 409-379-5527 or 409-379-8400.

Hen House Mini Mall Sidewalk Sale April 5th

The Hen House Mini Mall on the Courthouse Square will have a sidewalk sale this Saturday, April 5th beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Mall features jewelry, purses, glassware, Prom Dresses, Hair Bows, Furniture and great items for graduation and Mothers Day gifts! Sabine River Authority Symposium April 12th

The East Texas Historical Association, headquartered on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, will sponsor a one-day symposium that will review the legislative process necessary in both states to launch the Toledo Bend Dam and Reservoir project, and explore its economic and social impact on the area of both states.
 

            Thousands of Louisianans and Texans participated in the project as landowners, construction workers, or, ultimately, recreational tourists.  All are cordially invited to participate in the symposium, which will be held in the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church of Jasper, Texas, on Saturday, April 12, 2008. The ticket price for the banquet is $20 per person and reserved tables for 6 or more are available. All tickets are pre-sold and will not be available at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the Powell Hotel Museum on Tuesday and Wednesday. Also, Orange Savings Bank, Community Bank of Texas, E.L. D.A. Alerts Newton County Residents

Fellow Newton County Residents:

Today I received a notice from the United States Department of Commerce that the Census Bureau is currently working in Newton County.  According to the notice, trained federal employees will be conducting household surveys by telephone and in-person interviews, as well as by mail. All Census Bureau representatives will have an official identification card, including the person’s picture, signature, expiration date, and the Department of Commerce seal. Each worker is required to show residents his or her credentials.

 Newton County Fair April 22nd-26th

The Newton County Fair Association announces the annual County Fair will begin on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 and will end with the Livestock Auction on Saturday, April 26, 2008. The annual Livestock Show, Auction and Fair attracts thousands of area residents yearly and promises to be one for the record books. So far, 179 animal entries have been recorded!

The Fair also includes a carnival, nightly entertainment, and arts and crafts exhibits. Booths are now available for $100 and for more information or to reserve booth space contact Ricky Simmons at 409-379-5061 or for arts and crafts guidelines call the Extension Service at 409-379-4831.
